Australian wicketkeeper Alyssa Healy doesn’t want to play ICC women’s T20 World Cup in Bangladesh

Australian wicketkeeper Alyssa Healy has expressed reservations about participating in the upcoming ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024, scheduled to be held in Bangladesh. Her concerns stem from the ongoing political turmoil in the country, which has seen widespread protests and the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Healy believes that hosting a major sporting event like the T20 World Cup could divert resources away from addressing the critical needs of the people of Bangladesh, who are facing significant challenges.

“I find it hard to fathom playing in Bangladesh at the moment,” Healy said in a recent interview. “As a human being, I feel it might be wrong to play there.”

The ICC is now faced with the decision of whether to proceed with the tournament in Bangladesh or relocate it to a different host country. The UAE and Zimbabwe are currently being considered as potential alternatives.

Healy has made it clear that she will respect whatever decision the ICC ultimately makes. However, her concerns highlight the broader ethical considerations surrounding hosting major sporting events in countries experiencing political instability.
