Former India spinner Harbhajan Singh has shared his thoughts on India’s chances in the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024 in Australia, emphasizing the need for a strong start in the opening Test in Perth, which begins on November 22. The series is critical for India’s hopes of qualifying for the World Test Championship (WTC) 2025 Final.
A Must-Win Start in Perth
Harbhajan believes that the Perth Test holds the key to India’s success in the series. Highlighting the pressure a poor start could bring, he stated:
“The first Test will be very important. If India starts well in Perth, the team will give a solid fight in the series. If India doesn’t start well, then problems will escalate.”
India’s 50-50 Chance to Retain the Trophy
Speaking on Jatin Sapru’s YouTube channel, Harbhajan said India’s chances of winning the series are evenly balanced but gave a slight edge to Australia because of their home advantage and India’s recent struggles.
“It’s 50-50. Australia will have good conditions, and pitches will be good. India’s confidence might be shaken after the loss to New Zealand, but I feel Indian batters will come good in Australia.”
India is coming off a 3-0 series loss at home against New Zealand, a setback that Harbhajan acknowledges could dent the team’s morale. However, he dismissed the notion that players need domestic cricket exposure to regain form, pointing out that the challenges in New Zealand were vastly different from the conditions expected in Australia.
Pujara’s Role and Rahul’s Redemption
Harbhajan highlighted the importance of Cheteshwar Pujara as a stabilizing force, someone capable of wearing down Australian bowlers and making the ball old. He also backed KL Rahul, who has faced heavy criticism, to deliver in Australia.
“We need a player like Pujara, who can grind in and make the ball old. KL Rahul has been criticized so much, but he is a class player.”
Australia’s Edge at Home
While optimistic about India’s fight, Harbhajan acknowledged that playing in Australian conditions, especially on Perth’s bouncy track, gives the hosts a slight edge.
Upcoming Series Schedule
The five-match Test series will see India travel across iconic venues in Australia:
- First Test: Perth (November 22).
- Second Test: Adelaide (Day-Night, December 2).
- Third Test: Brisbane (December 12).
- Fourth Test: Melbourne (Boxing Day, December 26).
- Fifth Test: Sydney (New Year’s Test, January 3).
India will also play a pink-ball practice match before the Adelaide Test.
Harbhajan’s Final Word
Harbhajan’s message to Team India is clear: a strong start in Perth could set the tone for a competitive series, while a stumble early on might make it an uphill battle. As India looks to bounce back from their recent struggles, fans will hope Harbhajan’s belief in their resilience proves true.
