In an unusual and unfortunate turn of events, renowned commentator and host Mark Howard was rushed to the hospital after sustaining an injury caused by a flying bail during a promotional shoot ahead of the second Test match of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 in Adelaide.
The incident occurred while Brett Lee, the former Australian speedster, was participating in a bowling challenge. Howard, positioned behind the stumps as a wicketkeeper, was struck on the head by a bail after Lee’s delivery hit the stumps.
“A Once-in-a-Million Chance,” Says Brett Lee
Speaking to News Corp, Brett Lee described the bizarre nature of the incident:
“I bowled a ball that hit the stumps, but I heard two noises. I haven’t seen a bail travel that fast before. It was a once-in-a-million chance that the bail would hit someone. I think the bail hit him first before he caught the ball.”
Howard was immediately taken to the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, where he received stitches. Despite the injury, he remains optimistic and determined to fulfill his broadcasting commitments for the second Test.
Howard’s Resilience
The commentator expressed relief that the injury did not impact his eye, which could have had severe implications for his television career.
“Lee was concerned, and I am happy that I managed to avoid an eye injury,” said Howard.
Brett Lee reassured fans of Howard’s resilience, stating:
“He will be there in the second Test. He is still in the hospital but is carrying out his duties from that place.”
Second Test Set to Proceed Amid Drama
As the Adelaide Oval gears up for the Pink-Ball Test, this incident adds an unusual twist to the build-up. Howard’s determination to continue working underscores his dedication, even as cricket fans and colleagues alike wish him a speedy recovery.
