Jersey Retirement for Kohli & Sharma: Raina For, Uthappa Against

Former Indian cricketer Suresh Raina has called for the BCCI to retire jersey numbers 18 and 45 in honor of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma’s immense contributions to Indian cricket. This comes after India’s victory at the 2024 T20 World Cup, following which both Kohli and Sharma announced their retirement from the T20I format.

Raina joins the ranks of those who believe Kohli and Sharma deserve the honor, similar to Sachin Tendulkar’s number 10 and MS Dhoni’s number 7 which have already been retired by the BCCI. He argues that retiring these jerseys would inspire young players and motivate them to create their own legacies.

However, another former Indian player, Robin Uthappa, has a different perspective. Uthappa expressed concerns about running out of jersey numbers if the BCCI keeps retiring them. He suggests the BCCI hold onto these iconic numbers and award them to future players who prove worthy of carrying the legacy.

The debate on jersey retirement for Kohli and Sharma is sure to continue, with strong arguments on both sides.
