Bangladesh has appointed Litton Das as captain for the upcoming three-match T20I series against the West Indies, marking the first time he will lead the side for an entire series. Previously, Litton had captained in a one-off T20I against New Zealand in April 2021.
This series, set to take place in Kingstown, will conclude Bangladesh’s ongoing all-format tour of the Caribbean. The matches are scheduled for December 16, 18, and 20.
Squad Highlights and Key Inclusions
The squad features the return of batting allrounder Shamim Hossain, who last played an international match in December 2023. Shamim, 24, has shown flashes of promise in his 14 T20I appearances, with 254 runs at a strike rate of 115.98 and a solitary half-century.
A notable inclusion is Ripon Mondol, a 21-year-old medium-fast bowler who made his T20I debut at the 2023 Asian Games, where he impressed with four wickets as Bangladesh clinched the bronze medal.
Experienced players Soumya Sarkar, Nasum Ahmed, and Afif Hossain also return to the squad. Soumya, fresh off a stellar performance in the Rangpur Riders’ Global Super League title triumph, bolsters the batting lineup.
Missing Players
The squad will be without several key names:
- Najmul Hossain Shanto, the regular all-format captain, is sidelined with a hamstring injury sustained during the Afghanistan series in November.
- Veteran all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan remains unavailable, with no update on his international future.
- Towhid Hridoy (groin injury), Mustafizur Rahman (paternity leave), and Rakibul Hasan are absent, while Mahmudullah has retired from T20I cricket.
Litton Das’s Thoughts on Leadership
Litton, who has been a pivotal player for Bangladesh in recent years, expressed his excitement about leading the team:
“I am honored to captain Bangladesh in this important series. We have a good mix of youth and experience, and I am confident in our ability to compete strongly against the West Indies,” Litton said.
