Mohammed Shami Unlikely to Travel to Australia for Border-Gavaskar Trophy Amid Fitness Concerns

India’s pace spearhead Mohammed Shami, recovering from ankle and knee injuries, remains doubtful for the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy as he awaits fitness clearance from the National Cricket Academy (NCA). Despite showcasing encouraging performances in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT) 2024, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has yet to greenlight his inclusion due to concerns about his ability to handle the rigors of Test cricket.

Shami’s Journey Back from Injury

Shami has faced a challenging year with multiple injury setbacks, including an ankle surgery followed by swelling in his knees. These injuries sidelined him from international cricket for over 12 months and prevented his inclusion in India’s squad for the Australia series.

The 33-year-old returned to competitive cricket in the SMAT, representing Bengal and claiming eight wickets in seven matches. His performances, particularly a standout 3/26 against Rajasthan that helped Bengal secure a spot in the knockouts, have been commendable.

BCCI’s Cautious Approach

According to reports by Cricbuzz, the BCCI’s Sports Science wing conducted an in-depth evaluation of Shami’s fitness during a SMAT game in Rajkot. The panel, which included selector SS Das, head of sports science Nitin Patel, and strength and conditioning coach Nishanta Bordule, remains unconvinced of his readiness for the physical demands of Test cricket.

Although Shami has been bowling at full throttle in domestic matches, the NCA is yet to provide the fitness clearance essential for international selection. The committee is prioritizing his long-term fitness and workload management over a rushed return.

BGT Series Appearance Unlikely

Given the current timeline, Shami’s participation in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy appears improbable, at least for the initial matches. Optimistically, he might make a return for the final Test in Sydney, scheduled from January 3–7, if cleared by the NCA.

The absence of Shami leaves a significant void in India’s pace attack for the high-stakes series against Australia, as his ability to extract bounce and reverse swing is crucial in overseas conditions.

Looking Ahead

While Shami’s domestic performances fuel hope, the BCCI’s cautious approach underscores the importance of ensuring his complete recovery before returning to the international stage. For now, cricket fans and team management will have to wait and watch, hoping for his return to full fitness and readiness for future assignments.
