Rahul Dravid ‘Unlikely’ To Re-Apply For India’s Head Coach Position

On Friday, Jay Shah, the Secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), made a significant announcement regarding the future leadership of India’s men’s cricket team. With Rahul Dravid’s tenure as head coach nearing its conclusion after the upcoming T20 World Cup, the BCCI has decided to invite applications for the coveted position.

Shah revealed that the incoming head coach will be offered a contract spanning three years, extending until the 50-over World Cup in 2027. This move underscores the BCCI’s commitment to ensuring stability and continuity in the leadership of the team.

Despite being given the option to re-apply for the position, Rahul Dravid is reportedly not inclined to continue as the head coach. Dravid, a former Indian cricket captain renowned for his astute cricketing acumen and leadership qualities, assumed the role of head coach in November 2021.

His appointment followed a highly successful tenure with the Indian Under-19 team from 2015 to 2019, during which he nurtured several young talents who have since become integral parts of the senior squad. Prior to his stint as head coach, Dravid served as the head of the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru for two years.

Initially, Dravid’s tenure as head coach was slated to conclude after the 2023 Cricket World Cup. However, the BCCI opted to extend his contract until the T20 World Cup in the USA and the Caribbean.

Under Dravid’s guidance, the Indian team has participated in three major tournaments, including the T20 World Cup in Australia (2022), where they reached the semi-finals. Additionally, they contested the final of the World Test Championship (2021-23), falling short against Australia, and the 50-over World Cup in 2023, where they suffered defeat once again at the hands of the Aussies in Ahmedabad.

As he approaches the culmination of his tenure, Rahul Dravid is determined to end his coaching stint on a high note by securing victory for India and putting an end to the nation’s 11-year ICC trophy drought. His legacy as both a player and a coach remains indelible, and his contributions to Indian cricket are widely acknowledged and celebrated.
