The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has appointed Richard Whittam KC as the Chair of the newly formed Cricket Discipline Panel (CDP). This move is part of the ECB’s ongoing efforts to enhance the governance of English cricket and ensure fairness and transparency in disciplinary matters.
Whittam, a seasoned barrister with a wealth of experience in regulatory and criminal law, will oversee the CDP, which is responsible for handling disciplinary cases involving breaches of the ECB’s Professional Conduct Regulations. These regulations cover a wide range of issues, including match-fixing, corruption, and player misconduct.
The appointment of Whittam reflects the ECB’s commitment to improving the disciplinary process in cricket. The CDP will operate independently from the ECB, ensuring fairness and impartiality in all cases.
This change comes in the wake of the Independent Commission for Equity in Cricket (ICEC) report, which highlighted the need for reform in English cricket. The establishment of the CDP is a significant step towards addressing the issues raised in the report.
Whittam’s appointment is expected to bring a fresh perspective and a strong sense of justice to the role. His experience in sports law and his commitment to fair play will be invaluable in ensuring that the CDP operates effectively and upholds the highest standards of conduct.
